Description
In 1992, Uruguay’s first prestige red was born: Preludio Barrel Select. A pioneering wine, it continues to stand as one of Familia Deicas’s most iconic labels, blending innovation with deep tradition.
The wine begins in select vineyard plots yielding just 40 hl per hectare, where only the most concentrated bunches are hand-harvested. Grapes undergo two rigorous selections — first in the vineyard, then grape by grape at the winery — before a prolonged three-week maceration captures full concentration of fruit, spice, and floral character.
Preludio is then entrusted to the family’s 1830 stone cellar, where constant natural temperature and humidity provide ideal aging conditions. Barrels are reviewed every six months; of the 600 that begin the process, fewer than 200 remain after 24–30 months of patient selection. Only these are chosen for assemblage by the tasting committee, blending Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and a touch of Marselan into the final cuvée.
In the glass, the 2018 vintage shows a lively purple color with violet hues, offering aromas of dried figs, ripe berries, vanilla, and subtle spice. The palate is structured yet refined, with rounded tannins, bright acidity, and a long finish — a wine built for cellaring, evolving gracefully over 5–15 years. Bottled unfiltered with natural corks, it continues its quiet maturation even after release.
Preludio remains the benchmark of Uruguayan red blends, celebrated with consistent 92–94 point ratings from leading critics, multiple gold medals, and international recognition as one of Uruguay’s first truly collectible wines.
