Flavor Notes

Blackberry • Plum • Cherry • Violet • Sweet Spice

Texture Notes

Juicy • Rounded • Balanced

Uruguay's signature grape meets one of the world's most beloved red varieties.

The Don Próspero Tannat Malbec combines the best characteristics of two noble grapes: the structure, freshness, and character of Tannat alongside the softness, fruit expression, and generosity of Malbec. At Pizzorno Family Estates, each variety is vinified separately to preserve its unique personality before being carefully blended to create a wine that is both expressive and harmonious.

Grown in the San Francisco vineyards of Canelones, where cooling influences from the Río de la Plata help maintain freshness and balance, the wine begins with a cold maceration before traditional fermentation. The Malbec portion spends six months in French oak, adding subtle complexity while allowing the vibrant fruit character to remain at the forefront.

Deep ruby-violet in color, the nose reveals aromas of blackberry, plum, cherry, and red berries layered with delicate floral notes and hints of spice. On the palate, Malbec contributes juiciness and roundness while Tannat provides structure and backbone. Fine tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, polished finish make this one of the most versatile and food-friendly reds in the Pizzorno portfolio. Part of the Don Próspero collection, it honors founder Don Próspero Pizzorno, whose vision continues to guide four generations of family winemaking.

"I love how this blend brings together the best of both grapes. It has the character of Tannat with a softer, generous side that makes it incredibly enjoyable. It's one of those bottles I never hesitate to recommend because it makes people feel at home."

About This Wine

Where does this wine come from?

Pizzorno Family Estates, Canelón Chico, Canelones, Uruguay. Nestled in the heart of Canelón Chico, Pizzorno Family Estates has been farming the same land for four generations. The vineyards benefit from Canelones' temperate climate, cooling Atlantic breezes, and clay-rich soils that naturally balance ripeness with freshness. Every vine is estate-grown and carefully tended by the Pizzorno family, resulting in wines that express both the character of the vineyard and the heritage of one of Uruguay's most respected family wineries.

Who makes this wine?

Carlos Pizzorno

Carlos Pizzorno is one of the pioneers of modern Uruguayan wine and has spent decades helping establish Pizzorno Family Estates as one of the country's benchmark producers. Today, he works alongside his children, Francisco and María José Pizzorno, who represent the fourth generation of the family. Together they combine generations of experience with a spirit of innovation, continuing to elevate the estate while remaining deeply committed to their family vineyards in Canelones.

Why did we choose this wine?

We chose this wine because it offers one of the most approachable introductions to Uruguay's signature grape.
