MEET THE MAKER

Carlos Pizzorno

Carlos Pizzorno is the third-generation winemaker behind Pizzorno Family Estates, a family winery founded in Canelón Chico in 1910 by his grandfather, Italian immigrant Don Próspero José Pizzorno. Raised among the vineyards, Carlos trained as an oenologist and returned to the family estate with a belief that its future could be much bigger than its past. In 1988, he began transforming Pizzorno from a traditional table-wine producer into the fine-wine estate it is today.

Under Carlos, Pizzorno embraced better vineyard practices, modern technology, limited-production wines, and international markets—without losing the hands-on character of a family winery. That balance between tradition and curiosity still defines Pizzorno today. The estate harvests its own vineyards by hand, while continuing to experiment with what Uruguayan wine can be—including its pioneering carbonic-maceration Tannat, first made in the late 1990s. Today, Carlos works alongside the family's fourth generation, Francisco and María Clara, ensuring that what began in 1910 continues to evolve rather than simply endure.

WHERE IS IT FROM

Canelones, Uruguay Since 1910

Just 20 kilometers north of Montevideo, Pizzorno Family Estates sits in Canelón Chico, in the historic heart of Uruguay's wine country. Here, the family's 21 hectares of vineyards surround the winery itself — the same estate four generations of Pizzornos have called home since 1910.

The vineyards lie on gentle slopes of permeable loam-clay and calcareous soils, with subsoils rich in calcium carbonate. The nearby Río de la Plata helps shape Canelones' temperate climate, creating conditions particularly well suited to Tannat and the diverse varieties the family grows.

Everything begins here. Pizzorno works exclusively with its own grapes, harvests by hand, and follows each vineyard from pruning through picking. More than a century on the same land has given the family something technology can't replicate: generations of experience understanding how this particular piece of Canelones becomes wine.

About the Terroir

What makes Uruguayan terroir unique?

Uruguay's terroir is defined by the Atlantic. Maritime winds and cool nights slow ripening and preserve natural acidity, giving the wines their signature lift and freshness. Beneath the vines, ancient clay, limestone, and granite soils, some among the oldest on the planet, add minerality, structure, and depth. It comes down to a combination of ocean, soil, and patient, low intervention farming that exists in very few places on earth.

Why does Uruguay make wine like nowhere else?

Tucked between the Atlantic and the wide open pampa, Uruguay is one of the few wine countries truly shaped by the ocean. Cool sea breezes and warm days let grapes ripen slowly, keeping the wines fresh, bright, and balanced. Add clay and limestone soils, a stubborn signature grape in Tannat, and a culture of small, family run estates that farm by hand, and you get wines with real character that taste like they could come from nowhere else.
