Uruguay is best known for Tannat, its bold, structured signature red grape. The country produces small-batch, food-friendly wines shaped by a cool Atlantic climate, with a growing reputation for crisp Albariño and elegant coastal whites alongside its reds. Most come from small, family-run estates rather than large industrial producers.

Tannat is Uruguay's national grape, a deeply colored red known for firm tannins, dark fruit, and structure. Originally from southwest France, it was brought to Uruguay by Basque immigrants in the 1870s and has thrived there ever since. Uruguayan Tannat tends to be bolder yet more approachable and balanced than versions from elsewhere, thanks to the country's ocean-cooled climate.

Uruguayan wines are known for being fresh, balanced, and food-friendly. The reds, led by Tannat, offer ripe dark fruit and real structure without heaviness, while the whites, like Albariño, are crisp, bright, and mineral. The Atlantic influence gives nearly all of them a signature freshness and lift.

Most Uruguayan wine comes from the south of the country, near the Atlantic coast. Canelones, just north of Montevideo, is the historic heartland and produces the majority of the country's wine, while Maldonado, home to estates like Garzón, is the exciting coastal region driving Uruguay's modern reputation. Other key areas include Montevideo, Colonia, and San José.

Uruguay's terroir is defined by the Atlantic. Maritime winds and cool nights slow ripening and preserve natural acidity, giving the wines their signature freshness. Beneath the vines, ancient clay, limestone, and granite soils add minerality and structure. It is a combination of ocean, soil, and patient, low-intervention farming found in very few places on earth.

Tannat is the flagship, but Uruguay grows a wide range of grapes. Reds include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Marselan, and Cabernet Sauvignon, while whites include Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Viognier. Albariño in particular has become a signature coastal white for the country.
