Tannat: The Soul of Uruguay

Tannat: The Soul of Uruguay

Tannat is the emblematic grape of Uruguay. It arrived from the south of France in the late 19th century and was developed with great vision by the Basque pioneer Don Pascual Harriague, who cultivated it with remarkable results.

It is a robust variety, with firm tannins and deep aromas, that found its true home in Uruguay. Here, caressed by the sea breeze and warmed by the gentle sun, it learned to soften without renouncing its strength.

Uruguayan winemakers engage in a dialogue with the grape, listening closely and learning to recognize its moments of glory to achieve its finest aromatic expression. Some wineries produce young wines, where the fruit opens generously and the tannins barely whisper. Others choose to give tannins a profound voice, prolonging macerations and allowing the wine to rest in proud oak barrels.

Tannat finds its perfect pairing in red meats, bold cheeses, and the companionship of lasting friendships. Over time, this variety has become the calling card of Uruguay in the world of wine.
